"Cash for Clunkers" Doesn't Make Sense

Turn in your gas guzzling, beat up car and get a $4,500 discount on your brand new, fuel-efficient vehicle!

Sounds like a good plan, doesn’t it? It would be, if it were being offered by a private auto dealership or manufacturer. Unfortunately it’s not. It’s another government ploy to play favorites in the marketplace with our grandchildren’s tax dollars.

So far this year, the U.S. government has thrown billions at Chrysler and General Motors in a failed attempt to keep them out of bankruptcy, President Obama has fired the CEO of GM, and the government now owns more than 60% of our nation’s largest auto manufacturer. Now they’re getting into the used car industry, having spent over $1 Billion of borrowed money in just one week. To make things worse, Speaker Nancy Pelosi rushed an additional $2 Billion in borrowed funds through the House to continue the program, and President Obama is pressuring the Senate to follow suit.

The lack of basic common sense coming out of Washington is just appalling.

I have enormous confidence in the American economy because I believe in the steadfast resolve of the American people. But folks, we can’t keep spending like this. Our nation just can’t afford it. Government subsidies, handouts, bailouts, and takeovers are stunting economic growth and killing our ability to rebound from this economic crisis.

You know where I stand, but I want to know where you stand. I’ve been traveling the district meeting folks during my Common Sense chats, and the turnout has been strong. But I can’t reach everyone this way. That’s why I’m asking you to click here and tell me what’s on your mind.

Please click this link and answer a few short questions about our nation’s most important issues. It will only take about 3 minutes of your time.

Where do you stand on the President’s health care proposal?

Is the “Cash for Clunkers” program working or is it another example of wasteful government spending?

Should we audit the Federal Reserve?

Please click here and tell me what’s on your mind. I need your opinions and thoughts so that I can win this race and help shake up Congress with some small town common sense.

Thanks again for your support!
