I hope you all had a great Christmas and a nice start to 2015. For the past few years, I have sent weekly emails during the legislative session to provide you with updates on the previous week’s activities. I will continue to do that this session, as well.
The General Assembly returns Tuesday for the first week of the 2015 session. The first week will focus on the inauguration, but there will be some work going on, too. Here is what I expect this first week in the Senate:
Inauguration of Governor Nikki Haley – Governor Haley will be sworn in for a second term on Wednesday at 11:00. The inaugural ceremony is free and open to the public. If you would like more information about the swearing-in ceremony and other inaugural activities, please visit this site. https://web.sc.gov/2015Inauguration
Senate Organization – Although the Senate typically goes through reorganization – selecting seats and committee assignments – just every four years, we will have to complete that process on Tuesday because a new senator was elected in a November special election. I expect to keep the same committee assignments, but I will probably move to a different seat in the Senate chamber this year.
Ethics – The General Assembly has spent a good bit of time over the past couple years talking about reforming our ethics laws, but nothing has passed on that front. I expect the Senate will take up S. 1 http://scstatehouse.gov/sess121_2015-2016/bills/1.htm early in the session this year. I have been assigned to the subcommittee considering the legislation, and we are scheduled to meet on Tuesday afternoon to pass the bill out of subcommittee. I expect we will have a full committee meeting on Thursday (unusual for the first week of session) so the full Senate can debate the bill starting next week. I will give you more information next week.
Town Hall Meetings – I have held over 100 town hall meetings throughout our district over, and I really appreciate the hundreds of folks who have participated. These town hall meetings give me a chance to keep you updated about what’s going on in Columbia and, more importantly, allow me to hear what’s on your mind. I’m already working on the next round of meetings, which I hope to schedule for February and March. I’ll get the schedule out soon.
Our Senate District – Senate district 25 consists of all of Edgefield County and parts of Aiken, Lexington, McCormick, and Saluda Counties. If you’d like to see the district map, go here http://redistricting.scsenate.gov/S815DistrictMaps/S815_D25_Lmap.pdf

Speaking with Groups – Several groups, clubs, and classes around our Senate district have invited me to attend their meetings and provide legislative updates. If you would like for me to come speak with your group, please let me know.
Email updates – If you know of people in or around District 25 who do not receive my updates but would like to get them, please email their names and email addresses to me. You can also forward this email to them and encourage them to sign up for the updates at www.senatormassey.com.
